Memorial Day honors Americans who died serving their country in wars. It is commemorated annually on the last Monday in May. This day originally paid tribute only to military personnel who died in the Civil War (1861-1865). However over the years, this changed. This special day honors all those who died in a war while giving service to the United States. In the past it was also called Decoration Day.

On May 5, 1866 residents of Waterloo, New York, celebrated Memorial Day in honor of everyone who died during the Civil War. Businesses closed and soldiers’ graves were decorated. Two years later, General John Alexander Logan officially proclaimed May 30, 1868 as Memorial Day, adopting the same practice that began in the Southern states a few years earlier. Southern states celebrated a separate Memorial Day in honor of the Confederate dead, until after World War I.

In 1971 US congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated on the last Monday in May. Then on December 28, 2000, President Bill Clinton signed the ‘National Memorial Day Act’. This act designated 3:00pm as the official time to honor everyone who had lost their lives during war.
